This is one of the major Protestant churches, named after Martin Luther (1483-1546), who in many ways was the originator of the Reformation. His chief message was that human beings cannot earn heaven by ritual, prayers or good works. Christ died to set us free from our sins, and all that is asked of us is to believe this and accept it, “justification by faith”.

The Lutheran churches are predominant in north-east Germany and Scandinavia, and there are many of them in the United States. They number about 75 million in the world. In the UK there are very few Lutherans, mostly people of German or Scandinavian origin.

Within every major religion, there are differences of opinion between leaders, and between leaders and followers. We only aim to provide an overview.
